I know that most South Africans live in homes thar are heavily guarded and have 11 foot fences and barbed wire, etc, so it will be very hard for the delivery man to reach the doorstep......so when you guys order pizza or Chinese Food, do you just meet them at the gate?

South Africa has a very good fast food service system in place, you can phone Mr. Delivery and order fast food from different food vendors in your area of residence and have the full order promptly delivered like you find anywhere in the Western world.



Or, you can phone your fast food franchise and ask them to deliver(the majority do).



Where there is a high fence or wall there is normally an intercom system in place that will enable the delivery man to communicate with the home owners, all he needs to do is buzz on the intercom like any other visitor.



Crime is high in South Africa and there are those that have high fences or walls, but these are more common in affluent areas in Johannesburg and other big cities, but this is certainly not the standard in South Africa.
The delivery guy will just ring the bell and if he is legit you let him in or meet him at the gate. The delivery guys are really jacked, better than the US in my opinion and the food is better too. Obviously you are only going to open if you have ordered food and by the time they get to the gate (for my house at least but not in most cases) they have already been vetted by security guards and have had their pictures taken and their car license plate number written down. The food will still be hot though :-)

yes we do - but the delivery company's elephants tend to tramp over the 11 foot fences so sometimes that can be a problem - so you order delivery and then you pay for the food plus you have to pay to get the fence fixed. So delieverys can be quite expensive in SA - I also choose a delivery / take away outlet according to the transport they use. Horses are ok - but sometimes they leave huge piles of cr*p in the garden - I generally prefer those that deliver by ostrich - much faster and more reliable.
Hey don't worry about the one answer - as with all rumours they get blown out of all proportions just to make them more outragous! No we don't have 11ft fences. Of course you can get pizza or whatever delivered. This is another stupid question. You must not know very much about South Africa at all. Firstly in most towns it is illegal to have a fence higher than around 7 foot, I personally have never seen a house with an 11 foot wall.



When we order pizza the man comes and knocks on our door, we then open the door, let him in our house pay him and then let him out again.
There are delivery services in each town, and these dudes are well versed in all gate and security aspects. They just ring the bell, and the porter or gatekeeper will let them in. Simple ! And if there is no bell, well, then they hoot, or phone to say that they are in front of the house !!
we have delivery but most gates have an intercom which is used to communicate. delivery the ring the intercom and are bussed in in or met at the gate.
I don't have any those, just like many others who live here - so the delivery man just ring the bell - all he has to watch out for is my cat ... trying to get to the pizza first
